ONLINE PEDAGOGY
5 Methods for Effective Online Pedagogy
Switching to digital pedagogy does not mean simply slapping lessons online and being done with it. Online pedagogy requires the same- if not more- dedication to inspired teaching as in-person classrooms do. The following five methods are good starting points for providing effective and successful outcomes for your students:

Build a Community Instead of a Classroom
While it is still a classroom, approaching your online learning environment as nothing more than a classroom can hinder your teaching. Instead, try building a community- an online learning family- that learns, reflects, and discusses things together.

Be Active
If you want your students to be active, you can model activity and accessibility as well. Your students should be able to easily reach out to you and you can easily jump into discussions, adding juicy tidbits and real world examples. Comment on your students’ comments or discussion points and make any other move you can think of to be present.

But Not Available All the Time
If you don’t set boundaries you will quickly wear yourself down and be unable to provide the quality of teaching you want. Set certain hours aside for being online and interactive. When that time is up, shut it down. Do let your students know when you will and will not be available so they know what to expect.

Give Small Chunks of Information
Keep your content short - no more than 20 minutes. If possible, try for 10 minute chunks so the students can more easily absorb it. Lessons that are too long will quickly lose their interest and, as you are not face to face, you will not know when you need to get them back on track.

Use Multimedia
Put as much of your content into some form of multimedia as possible. Provide videos and presentations to share information. Also, have students create a variety of media presentations or videos for assignments. I learn a lot about new technology and apps from my student presentations!
